22nd edition of Karlsruher Discussions

2-4 March 2018 the 22nd edition of the Karlsruher Dialogues took place, in form of a conference with side events, such as ARTE Film night and performances at the State Theatre of Baden in Karlsruhe, Germany. The contributions to the conference were international.

The conference started on Friday, the 2nd of March with a keynote of Leo Hollis (UK), historian and urban planner, author of the bestseller book ‚Cities are Good for You: The Genius of the Metropolis’. He was introduced by a number of opening discussions, including the Mayor of Karlsruhe, the vice-president of KIT and Prof. Dr. Caroline Y. Robertson-von Trotha, director of ZAK, Centre for Cultural and General Studies, which made the Karlsruhe Dialogues over these 22. years, now probably for the last time. The event was accompanied by music and a film on what is a smart city.
The second day featured a conference with contributions from:

— Interior Peripheries: Towards a Horizontal Metropolis Prof. Dr. Paola Viganò (Italy) Professor of Urbanism, École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland and Università Iuav di Venezia, Italy 
— Sharing Economy: Workers’ Rights under Threat? Prof. Dr. Trebor Scholz (USA) Associate Professor of Culture and Media, The New School, New York
— Smart Cities: Ethos instead of Algorithm? Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kaschuba (Germany) Director of the Berlin Institute for Integration and Migration Research (BIM)

This was followed by an ARTE (German-French television in Strasbourg) film night on the topic of the city, including:
- Wem gehören unsere Städte? (Who do our cities belong to?) 
- Peripheria 
- Städte der Zukunft: Smart Cities (Cities of the Future: Smart Cities) 
- Städte der Zukunft: Die urbane Farm (Cities of the Future: The Urban Farm) 
- Teheran Tabu (Teheran Taboo)
The third day had a round table including the key note speaker and Rob van Gijzel, former MP (Netherlands) Former Lord Mayor of the city of Eindhoven, Chairman of the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), Wolfgang Mayer (Germany) Former representative of the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Egypt, former head conservator of the state capital Stuttgart Élisabeth Guigou (France) tbc Former French minister, President of the Anna Lindh Foundation.

On the third day there were events at the Baden State Theatre in Karlsruhe, namely a lecture by Stephan Porombka from his book "It is love" on love letters in the aera of digital phones in the afternoon. In the evening there was a theatre play on Angriff auf die Freiheit (Attack on freedom) Adapted from work by Juli Zeh and Ilija Trojanow, directed by Patrick Wengenroth.
