The location foreseen for the Guggenheim arts museum is situated in the heart of Finlands capital in the bay of Eteläsatama (South Harbour). Eteläsatama is the arrival and departure point of ferry ships to and from Tallinn and other destinations. In close proximity to the project site, at the end of the bay the main market square, market hall, presidential palace, city hall and other prominent elements of the city structure are located.

After the Guggenheim competition received an overwhelming number of 1.715 submissions in September 2014, six finalists have been announced in early December 2014. The winners of the second phase will be announced in June 2015.

During the announcement of the competition finalists, citizen protests took place in Helsinki. At the same time a parallel competition was launched in order to propose alternatives for transforming Eteläsatama. This competition will end shortly.

While no definite decision has been made by the City of Helsinki for realising the publicly funded project, we might see a variety of fresh ideas for Eteläsatama with our without a Guggenheim museum during the coming half year.
