Two artistic landscape trails and a territorial agenda for a Greater Nantes Saint-Nazaire metropolitan area, France.

Since few years, the City of Nantes in France has been organising geographic urban trails through various interventions by contemporary artists in Nantes’ hidden corners and urban landscapes.

An intervention as part of "the journey to Nantes" artistic trail
There are two main artistic trails. The first one, the “city trail”, is 10 miles long and goes through the urban landscape of Nantes. The second one, “Estuaire”, is approx. 40 miles long and runs along the estuary of the river Loire between the city of Nantes and the city of Saint-Nazaire. Each of these artistic trails are an invitation to discover the urban landscape and the estuarine landscape of Nantes and its surroundings.

The city trail

The first one is a 10-mile trail, with thirty stops, from le Lieu Unique ( to the western tip of the Isle of Nantes. Along the way, the walk goes through public works of art to elements of architectural heritage, from classic sites to little-known treasures, from historical back alley to contemporary architecture, and from a surprising view of the city to an incredible sunset on the Loire estuary.

The Estuaire trail

This trail runs through a vaster part of the surrounding territory of the city of Nantes, and particularly its large estuary leading to the Atlantic Ocean through the city of Saint-Nazaire. The installations are interweaving with the beauty of the Loire river, its unique biodiversity and the diversity of the surrounding landscapes. But Estuaire has also a political agenda – the creation of a Greater Nantes Saint-Nazaire metropolitan area.
