The garden of the castle in Carei (Romania)
Restoration of a rich heritage

One of the projects in the restoration of the rich heritage of Carei was a common frontier spanning programme for the historic garden of the castle, the garden being also part of a Europa Nostra award research 2014. The garden features a number of protected trees.

2014 the research award of Europa Nostra went to a study by Albert Fekete from Corvinus University of Budapest on historic castle gardens in Transylvania. The castle garden in Carei has been identified as one of the well conserved ones.
The city of Carei, in northern Romania, few km from the Hungarian frontier, features the castle of the count of Carei, a rich Hungarian nobleman, who owned castles across the historic country, since the arrival of the nation in the 11th century. Structural funds from the European Union allowed the restoration of historic heritage buildings across the city, in collaboration with other Romanian or Hungarian municipalities (ex. the castle in Carei and Ardud - the later a landscape archaeology programme, or the collaboration with Geberjen). A recently finished project (Common revitalization of protected historical gardens in Carei and Géberjén) concerns the historic gardens in Carei and Geberjen (the latter in Hungary) and included the reerrection of a fountain, new alleys, etc. ( The garden is a urban forest in itself, with many old trees, including the platan tree in the picture.
There are further Romanian studies about the garden, the journal Transsylvania Nostra published studies on the methodology for historic gardens by Andreea Milea applied for the castle garden in Carei, the Corvinus University of Budapest (Kristof Fatsar) did studies in the archives on the unrealised projects for the garden in Baroque time.
